Obituary: Betty Surles Sands

December 10, 2014

Our beautiful wife and mother, Betty Surles Sands, received her Angel Wings this past Sunday morning, December 7.

She was born July 26, 1937, to James Isaac and Sarah Rochelle Surles in Cherry Lake; she was their fifth child.

Betty attended Madison High School, where she played and lettered in basketball all four years; she was Class of 1955 Vice President; she was a member of the Beta Club, and Student Council.

After graduation, she attended Florida State University; then married her life-long love, Henry Sands, in 1957. They recently celebrated 57 years of marriage!

She was a charter member and active volunteer in John Wesley United Methodist Church, in Tallahassee. Most of her professional career was spent with the State of Florida, which she retired from in 1996.

Betty loved her three children; sons: Kelvin H. Sands and David K. (Lynna Bruce) Sands, of Tallahassee; and daughter, Sharon Sands Budd, of Boca Raton. She was the loving and very proud Grandmother of Shelby, Savannah, Carson, Cole, Bailey, Blair, Barrett and Bernie; and great-grandmother of Charlotte and Wyatt.

Betty hosted an annual Thanksgiving cane grinding at her family’s farm and enjoyed many wonderful years and family celebrations at her lake home in Cherry Lake. She loved traveling and baking.

Betty is survived by her brother, Robert and best friend, Mary Lou Surles. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Evelyn Surles Swift; and brothers: J. Thomas Surles and J. Glenn Surles. Many wonderful nieces and nephews completed her large family.

Visitation will be Friday morning, December 12, at 10 a.m., at John Wesley United Methodist Church, in Tallahassee. Services will follow at 11 a.m., and burial afterward at Roselawn Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to their home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Cherry Lake United Methodist Church or John Wesley United Methodist Church.
