Updated: Feb 20
Major David Harper of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Sunday February 16, 2020 at 12:24A.M., deputies were dispatched to the Greenville Multipurpose Center located on SW Grand Street in Greenville in response to the report of a large fight involving gunshots. Upon arrival deputies observed a large crowd of adults, both male and female, actively engaged in multiple physical fights. Deputies were forced to push their way through numerous on-lookers and instigators in attempt to stop the brawl. While dealing with the active fighting, approximately 20 gunshots were fired within close-proximity of the deputies from unknown individuals within the crowd. During the ensuing chaos, a deputy observed an unknown black male discharge three rounds into the ground from a handgun and then flee on foot. The deputy gave chase while giving commands to stop but lost sight of the suspect in the crowd that began to frantically disperse in multiple directions. Additional deputies and investigators who were off duty during this time were called in from their homes to respond and assist. While processing the crime scene, deputies were notified that three individuals had arrived at the Madison County Memorial Hospital with injuries obtained from this incident including one subject suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The other two individuals sustained injuries from being struck with glass bottles. The investigation into this incident is active and ongoing, however investigators have received very little cooperation from the numerous witnesses and limited cooperation from the victims themselves. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are asked to please call the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at (850) 973-4152 or the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at (850) 973-4001 extension 1.
