Chicken House Fire in Lee
On Monday November 20, 2017 Madison 911 Communication Center received a report of a chicken house on fire on Chilkat Street in Lee, Florida.
Fire crews arrived to find the the chicken house fully involved with black smoke visible from miles away. The property is owned by J.W. and Betty Ann Ellison. Witnesses at the fire reported that the house was full of chickens at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire was unclear at the time of this story.
The owner of the chicken house asked that the fire be allowed to burn out. He was afraid if it was put out that the decaying chickens would have a strong odor and would attract unwanted scavengers like buzzards. Chief Jordan of Madison Fire Rescue agreed to allow it to burn out if the owner took responsibility for the care and containment of the scene, to which he agreed.
The owner stated he had dropped the insurance recently on the Chicken house. Over the last couple of years the chicken house had been damaged by a tornado, and two hurricanes and now by fire.
