North Florida Community College Announces Plans to Change College Name Following Approval of New Bac

MADISON, FL – North Florida Community College President John Grosskopf and the NFCC District Board of Trustees have approved plans for NFCC to begin communications and take steps toward selecting a new name for the College. The name change has long been on the horizon and is now moving forward as NFCC expects to become a baccalaureate level granting institution in 2017 with the addition of a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. The State Board of Education unanimously approved NFCC’s plans to begin the BSN, the College’s first baccalaureate level program, in September. Classes are expected to begin in August.

“As we leave the community college badge behind and evolve into the next stage of our existence as a baccalaureate granting institution, we will be doing many exciting things,” said Grosskopf. “We look forward to this growth and evolution that will meet the specific needs of our district and workforce. NFCC’s mission and commitment to community will not change. We will continue to be your college, responsive to your needs, and an open door to education and opportunity for the North Florida area.”

NFCC is currently seeking input regarding the name change from focus groups that represent NFCC students, alumni, employees, board members and the community. The NFCC District Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the new name in January. From that point forward the College will begin working toward officially adopting the new name for Fall Term 2017.

This will be the second name change for the College which began offering classes in 1958 as North Florida Junior College. In July 1995, the District Board of Trustees changed the name of the College from North Florida Junior College to North Florida Community College in order to better define the purpose of the institution. Now 20 years later, the College is once again looking forward to a new name that will better define its future, but not change its mission which is centered around its students and community.
