Anderson Arrested at Scene of Fire

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Tuesday the 22nd day of March 2016 at approximately 7:24 pm deputies of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a member of the Lee Volunteer Fire Department requesting assistance with a male subject who was reported as trying to “fight” with firefighters and interfering with their attempt to extinguish a fire inside a mobile home. While responding to the scene located at 719 SE Pioneer Street in Lee the deputies learned that the male subject who was interfering with the firefighters was the property owner who initially called the Lee Volunteer Fire Department for assistance.

Upon arrival deputies observed Richard Lee Anderson spraying water on the mobile home with a water hose and refusing to obey orders of the fire fighters to back away so they could effectively fight the fire. Anderson became loud began to yell and curse at the fire fighters. Deputies instructed Anderson to back away and to stop yelling and using profanity in front of the small children who were present with other family members.

Anderson refused to obey the lawful orders of the deputies and began to curse at them as well. Anderson was told numerous times to stop his behavior or he would be arrested but Anderson still refused to step back and allow the fire fighters to fight the fire.

Deputies told Anderson he was under arrest for his Disorderly Conduct and Interference and was instructed to put his hands behind his back. Anderson refused to comply and began to physically resist the deputy’s attempts to arrest him. After a brief struggle deputies deployed a Taser to gain compliance. During the struggle family members began to aggressively approach the deputies but were intercepted by other deputies. Deputies were then able to gain control of Anderson and effect the arrest for Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Officer with Violence without causing injury to Anderson or themselves.

Anderson was transported to the Madison County Jail without further incident however continued to refuse to comply with the arresting officer resulting in an additional charge of Resisting Officer without Violence.
