Cowgirls Win 2nd Straight District Title

Tuesday, January 26th the MCHS Cowgirls began their district tournament play. The Cowgirls finished the regular season district play 5-1 being tied with Lafayette High for the #1 seed. A coin toss was needed to determine who would go into the tournament with the #1 seed. Lafayette won that coin toss and so the Cowgirls had to face district and neighboring rival Hamilton County. The Cowgirls endured a hard fought battle against the Lady Trojans, outlasting them 83-61. The Cowgirls were paced by Senior guard Jameica Cobb who poured in 36 points, 11 rebounds and 8 steals. Senior point guard Tamiera Mobley also contributed big with 21 points and 4 steals. Junior Josie Long had a solid all-around game with 9 points, 14 big rebounds and 3 steals. Seniors Kevisa Moore and Adrianna Kinsey had 8 and 6 points respectively. That win put the Cowgirls in the District championship game on Friday night against Lafayette who had defeated Jefferson County on Tuesday as well.

On Friday, January 29th the Cowgirls travelled to Mayo to play the host Lafayette Lady Hornets for the district championship. The game began with a couple of tight calls which ultimately lead to the Cowgirls being in foul trouble early. The Cowgirls weren’t dismayed by it though. The first quarter saw the score 17-16 in favor of the Lady Hornets. The Cowgirls came out the second quarter more focused and determined. The Cowgirls took a 2 point lead into the half, 35-33. The third quarter saw some good back and forth action with neither team wanting to give in. The third quarter ended with the Cowgirls up by one, 53-52. The fourth quarter the Cowgirls locked in and played a solid quarter pulling away from the Lady Hornets with some tough defense and some clutch free throws by senior Tamiera Mobley. The final score ended up being 69-59 in favor of the Cowgirls. The win secured the Cowgirls’ second straight District Championship and a home game in the Regional Semifinals. The Cowgirls were again paced by senior guard Jameica Cobb who had another big night in leading her team with 37 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Tamiera Mobley also chipped in big with 23 points. Tamiera responded with some clutch shots throughout the game to answer the barrage of threes hit by Lafayette’s senior guard Haley Fowler. Josie Long finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Adrianna Kinsey contributed with 2 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Cowgirls will face Hawthorne on Thursday, February 4th at 7pm at MCCS. The winner of that game moves on to the Regional Finals on February 9th. Please come out and support these ladies as they seek to make a push through the state playoffs. Admission is $7.
