U.S. 90/State Road 53 intersection improvements begin
Madison – A project to improve the intersection of U.S. 90 (Base Street) and State Road 53 North (Washington Street) in Madison is scheduled to begin February 22. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project includes widening the roadway to improve the turning radius at State Road 53 North to better accommodate semi-truck traffic.
Work includes making shoulder and drainage improvements. The driveway on the northeast corner of U.S. 90 and State Road 53 will be reconstructed. Sidewalk at both northern corners of U.S. 90 and State Road 53 North will be replaced with handicap-accessible ramps added. New traffic signals will be installed and pedestrian signals with countdown signals will be added to assist pedestrians in knowing how many seconds they have to cross the road. The entire intersection will be repaved at the end of the project, which is scheduled to be completed in the spring.
Daytime lane closures will occur weekdays after 8:30 a.m. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians will use sidewalks on the south side of U.S. 90 during work to replace the sidewalks on the northern corners. Speeding fines are doubled when workers are present in the work zone.
FDOT hired Concept Construction and Demolition, Inc., of Jacksonville to complete the work for $205,480.
An average of 10,900 vehicles travel each day on U.S. 90 at the U.S. 90/State Road 53 intersection in Madison.
