Obituary: Mary Elizabeth "Billie" Shealey Griffin


Mary Elizabeth "Billie" Shealey Griffin, 86 years old, passed away Monday, December 22, 2014, at Lake Park Nursing Home in Madison. Born and raised in Monticello/Jefferson County, she began her career with Farmers & Merchants Bank in Monticello as one of the first women employees. After her banking career, she worked for Dr. Hunter and Dr. Ward at Gerry Medical Clinic in Monticello.After several years in the medical field she worked as Deputy Tax Collector of Jefferson County under Mamie V. Capps. She then transferred to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee before retiring in 1990 from the Governor's Office.

Billie was born September 28, 1928, and lived her childhood years in Lamont where she was baptized at the Lamont Baptist Church.In 1954, she married Louis Capous "Pete" Griffin, Jr., and together they raised their three children in Monticello. Billie served as a Committee Woman for the Jefferson County Democratic Committee, was an active band parent of the Jefferson County High School marching band, and member of the adult choir at First Baptist Church in Monticello.She was also known for being an avid Florida Gator fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Capous "Pete" Griffin, Jr., her parents Lonnie and Bessie Shealey, Sr., a brother, Lonnie Shealey, Jr., and son-in-law, Douglas Collins.She is survived by a brother Reuben Shealey of Tallahassee, a daughter, Anita Collins of Monticello, and sons Wayne Griffin (wife Kathryn) and Ray Griffin (wife Susanne) of Madison. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Danny Collins, Clint Collins, Christopher Griffin, Casey Griffin, Robbie Griffin, Caitlin Day (and husband Christopher) and Christian Griffin.She is also survived by one great granddaughter, Peyton Collins.

Funeral services will be held December 27, 2014, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel in Monticello at 12:00 noon. A short visitation will be held in the Beggs Chapel at 11:00 am just before the funeral services. A graveside service will be held immediately afterwards at the Roseland Cemetery in Monticello. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to the Lamont Baptist Church.
