NFCC Announces Senator Bill Montford as Fall Commencement Speaker

MADISON, FL – North Florida Community College graduates completing degrees or certificates in December will be honored at NFCC’s Fall 2014 commencement ceremony on Dec. 16 at Van H. Priest Auditorium. The ceremony is a special occasion for NFCC graduates, their family and friends, and the College. This year’s commencement speaker, offering the keynote address to graduates during this special moment in their educational journey, is Senator Bill Montford.

"Being a graduate of a Florida Community College myself, I am honored to share such an important night with the newest graduates of North Florida Community College,” said Senator Montford. “An education is one the most valuable things anyone can have and I am looking forward to congratulating these students on this milestone."

Senator Montford was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2010, and subsequently re-elected to serve a four-year term in November 2012. He specifically serves District 3 including Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Hamilton, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor and Wakulla counties. Senator Montford also serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS).

Prior to becoming CEO in July 2006, Senator Montford served as School Superintendent in Leon County from 1996-2006, served as a school administrator for 26 years including 18 years as a high school principal, and was a former member of the Board of County Commissioners of Leon County.

“We are honored to have Senator Montford serve as our commencement speaker,” said NFCC President John Grosskopf. “His dedication to education and the community, and his words of wisdom in these areas, will surely benefit our graduates as they take the next step into higher education or their chosen careers.”

During his last two years in the Senate, Senator Montford has served in the following committees - Agriculture, Chair; Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, Vice Chair; Education K-12; Appropriations; Banking and Insurance; and Rules.

He is very active in a number of professional and civic organizations and has received numerous awards and recognitions for his dedication to education and the community. In 2014, Senator Montford received the Florida Library Association Award, the Florida Farm Bureaus Legislator of the Year award, the Florida School Boards Association Legislator of the Year award, the Tallahassee Urban League’s Legend Awardee designation, the Florida Retired Educators Association’s Larry Carmichael Legislative Appreciation Award, the Florida Farm Bureau’s Champion for Agriculture award and a Florida Highway Patrol Certificate of Appreciation.

Senator Montford holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics Education and a Master of Science Degree in Administration and Supervision from Florida State University.
