Drug Arrest

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Monday the 11th day of August 2014 at 4:32 pm investigators of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Drug Task Force stopped a van in the CVS parking lot after the investigators witnessed the van cut across all lanes of travel nearly striking an oncoming vehicle.

When investigators approached the female driver to discuss the traffic violation they detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. The driver apologized for her driving actions and stated that she was not paying attention. Investigators questioned the driver about the odor of marijuana she stated that her grandson who was the passenger hid something behind the glove box up in the dash as they were being stopped. The driver asked the investigators if they would locate and remove the concealed item from her vehicles dash.

Investigators then made contact with the passenger and identified him as James Waples of Madison. Waples was questioned but denied hiding anything in the dash and further denied having any marijuana or illegal contraband. Investigators conducted a search of the dash interior behind the glove box and located a plastic bag containing marijuana.

Waples informed investigators that he was currently on probation and the marijuana belonged to his grandmother, the driver. It was clear to investigators that the driver had no knowledge of what Waples hid in the dash of her vehicle. Waples was arrested without incident and transported to the Madison County Jail.

Arrested: James Alvin Waples 06/26/1987 1218 East US Hwy 90 Madison, FL 32340 1. Possession of Marijuana less 20 grams
