Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Thursday May 1, 2014 at 8:23 pm a Madison County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was dispatched to U.S. 90 West near Elizabeth Sims Road in regards to a complaint of a reckless driver who was driving all over the road using both lanes of travel. The vehicle was described as a Gray or Silver Ford SUV.
The responding deputy intercepted the suspect vehicle on U.S. 90 West near the West intersection of Elizabeth Sims Road. The deputy observed the suspect vehicle cross the center lane divider lines and back to the White fog line. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as Ira Lee Denson of Greenville. As Denson exited his vehicle he was unable to maintain his balance or stand steady on his feet. The deputy detected a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from Denson’s person. The deputy asked Denson to perform a series of Field Sobriety Exercises to determine if Denson’s normal faculties were impaired to the extent that he could not continue to safely operate a motor vehicle. Denson refused all exercises and was informed that refusing to participate in the Field Sobriety Exercises could suspend his CDL status driver license for a period of one year. Denson stated that he already knew that because he received a DUI two years prior. Denson was placed under arrest without incident and transported to the Madison County Jail where he refused to provide a breath sample.
